Song Of The Day

For about 18 months now, I have enjoyed writing this blog and reading your responses, both on the website and on social media.

The majority of the songs I have featured have been my choice, but I have always been happy to take requests.

The reason I enjoy writing this post so much is that it gives me the opportunity to research both the song and the artist. Some of my blogs have been more detailed than others. The main information I want to get out there is who sings the song, when it was released, the lyrics and a variety of videos original and live.

I am running a poll to see who is your favorite singer from this list. This is not to say that there isn’t better singers out there, but from the feedback I have received these are the most popular.

Whichever gets the most votes from you, will be the artist I will feature every day for 1 week, a different song everyday.

Please share this poll with your friends and family too so we can get everyone’s opinion.

Here are links to songs I have blogged from these artists to help you try to make your decision:-

SONG OF THE DAY Misirlou

Today’s Song Of The Day is dedicated to Manolis Angelopoulos.

Angelopoulos 2

The song I have chosen for today is “Misirlou”.

The earliest recordings of the song are a 1919 Egyptian composition called Bint Misr and a 1927 Greek rebetiko composition influenced by Middle-Eastern music. There are also traditional Arabic, Jewish, Armenian and Turkish versions of the song.

In 1962, Dick Dale’s released the American surf rock version which gave worldwide popularity to this tune. It was also remade by the Beach Boys & The Ventures as well as performed time and time again by international orchestras.

The tune was again made hugely popular when it was the main theme in the 1994 movie, Pulp Fiction, and was also a big feature in the 2006 song by the Black Eyed Peas, PUMP IT.

I want to focus this Song Of The Day on the Manolis Angelopoulos version.

Here is a live version of this song, performed by Kotsiras…….

Here is the ORIGINAL

Here is one for the Pulp Fiction fans…….

The Lyrics

SONG OF THE DAY “Βάλ΄ τε μου δυο κανναβουριές”

Today’s Song Of The Day is dedicated to Απόστολος Νικολαΐδης.

Apostolos

The song I have chosen for today is “Βάλ΄ τε μου δυο κανναβουριές” also known as “Όταν πεθάνω θάφτε με”.

This song was released by Apostolos Nikolaithis in 1971 on the album “Otan Kapnizei o Loulas”. This was such a huge hit that only 2 years later in 1973, it was re-released by Spiros Zagoreos.

And here is Zagoreos version………..

The lyrics for this song

SONG OF THE DAY Σ’ αναζητώ στη Σαλονίκη – S’anazito Sti Saloniki

Today’s Song Of The Day is dedicated to Dimitris Mitropanos.

Mitropanos

This song was released on the album “Η Εθνική μας μοναξιά” in 1992. This massive number was also composed by the late Marios Tokas, one of the greatest ever Greek Composers, who work alongside Mitropanos for many years.

Here is the original video for this huge hit. Very well put together with a Medieval theme.

And here is the legend singing this masterpiece LIVE!!!!!!!

The lyrics for this song

SONG OF THE DAY Αυτό το αστέρι (Auto T’asteri)

Today’s Song Of The Day is dedicated to Nikos Oikonomopoulos.

18a6f44985b8195bb1d232ba89ff0735

The song I have chosen for today is “Αυτό το αστέρι”.

This song was release in 2007 on the album “Proti Agapi”.

Here is the original tune……..

Here is our band performing this lovely song at a recent wedding in London.

The lyrics for this song

kokotas-stamatis

The song I have chosen for today is “Γιε μου” (Gie Mou) My Son.

This Great song, was released in 1977 on the album «Τελευταία νύχτα»

Here is a live version of this song.

Here is a video of me trying this one out in the studio. Hope you like it……..

The lyrics for this song

Gorgos Tsalikis

Gorgos Tsalikis

The song I have chosen for today is

Eimai Mia Hara” “Είμαι μια χαρά

Enjoy the video!!!!!!

The Lyrics

SONG OF THE DAY Zembekiko Tis Evdokias

The song I have chosen for today is Zeibekiko tis Evdokias

evdokia

Even though we call this SONG OF THE DAY, I still wanted to feature this Fantastic Classic tune. It is an instrumental piece and probably one of the most popular Greek tunes Ever!

Here is a clip from the original Movie it was written for.

and Mr Karantinis………..

Zeibekiko tis Evdokias is one of the most famous instrumental themes in Greek music. In Greek it should be translated as “Zeibekiko of Evdokia”.

Zeibekiko tis Evdokias was composed by Manos Loizos in 1971 for the homonym movie, Evdokia by Alexis Damianos. It is, along with Zorba the Greek, one of the most recognizable Greek melodies.

Its melody is usually stimulating and emotive to the Greeks; it makes them want to dance zeibekiko. After all, Evdokia is one of the most famous zeibekiko songs in Greece, which reflects freedom of the spirit, as well as passion, expression of feelings and manhood. In the movie, this theme was danced by a young soldier in a tavern.

The movie Evdokia

The movie Evdokia is a passion drama whose main characters are a young sergeant and a prostitute, who meet at a small town in Greece.

Giorgos, the soldier, dances a zeibekiko dedicated to this woman, Evdokia. However, Evdokia’s fiance (and pimp)  reacts and a fight starts.

Zeibekiko of Evdokia is a man’s dance that reflects his passion and desire, but also his “sevdah”. It comes as no surprise that this is the dance of a buster man – a magkas in Greek.

In the movie, the soldier is oppressed by the army since he is always obliged to obey to orders that diminish his personality. This zeibekiko dance is a way to express his feelings and free himself from all this oppression that makes his life miserable.

Evdokia and Giorgos dance together, in a way that  “connects” them; it’s like an erotic act. But since the society is still too introverted and conservative, this free dance has to stop. And this is why the pimp – who symbolizes oppression and conservatism once more – interferes and the fight starts.

The movie is all about the conflict of social values and desires, the inner struggle of the main heroes; Alexis Damianos takes a simple love story and creates a comment on the Greek society of that time, a “Greek tragedy” with socio-political reflections. Evdokia was characterized as one of the best Greek movies of all times, and definitely for a reason.

Zeibekiko tis Evdokias, a dance for the Greek soul

The dance Zeibekiko tis Evdokias is so much intertwined with the Greek soul, is the focal point of the movie, because it symbolizes love, passion, freedom and reaction to the society that tries to strain love and desire.

Watch the video, and the movie if possible, it’s a perfect example of soul-danced zeibekiko, a perfect example of the true spirit of an authentic Greek man who stands no oppression.
